4. Route Ralla de la Negra

Legend says that in the past Las Bardenas was a barren land where bandits took refuge. Many of these bandits were very popular in the region, but, without a doubt, the most famous was “Sanchicorrota El Rey de las Bardenas” (king of the Bardenas), who lived in the 15th century and whose real name was Sancho de Rota. It seems that while hiding in a cave he would assault the rich and share the loot with his partners in crime. He became so important that John II King of Aragon planned an ambush with 220 men to capture Sanchicorrota.

The route starts under Ralla de la Negra in the Bardenas Negras of Aragon. To access this point by car following a road and a track in good condition there is a track from Ejea de los Caballeros and El Sabinar available to download from DOWNLOADS >TRACK VARIANT.

The circular trail goes all the way up to Punta de la Negra, passing under the walls and pine forests of Ralla del Modrollar. Descend to Ralla de la Negra following a very steep trail and return to your car crossing an area of native pine forest and Mediterranean scrub.

We recommend doing this route with the nature guide Inma from the hostelry Hospedería de Sádaba.

There are no water and provisioning points along the route. The closest one is the village of El Sabinar. You should wear a cap and take enough water for the whole route. Avoid doing the route in summer, hot periods, and especially the middle hours of the day.
