LOCATED IN THE REGION OF CINCO VILLAS, SIERRA DE SANTO DOMINGO IS LIKE A MINIATURE OF THE PYRENEES. THE LAST STAGE SAYS GOODBYE TO REINO DE LOS MALLOS, CLIMBS TO THE TOP OF SANTO DOMINGO MOUNTAIN RANGE AND FINALLY DESCENDS TO LUESIA BY A SERIES OF EXCELLENT TRAILS THROUGH A FOREST SURROUNDED BY AMAZING ROCKY LANDSCAPES.
This stage is one of the longest and toughest of the challenge. After 4 days of riding, it will test every biker’s strength, running through a lonely land where bikers must be self-reliant and have some orientation skills. From Agüero to Luesia (48 km) there are no human settlements, consider this and carry enough food and water with you.
After saying goodbye to Riglos and its stunning mallos the route descends to the bottom of the valley, crosses Gallego River and passes by the medieval village of Murillo. A tough climb under Peña Rueba heads back to Camino Natural trail (garnet red signs). The trail head towards Agüero running by some short but demanding singletrack sections. This old town and its church are worth a visit.
We’ll keep riding by an unpaved road passing under the “mallos” before climbing to the top of Sierra de Santo Domingo. The ascent is long and has some very demanding slopes, it’s one of the hardest climbs of the entire tour. From the top , the views of Reino de los Mallos and the Pyrenees are splendid. The effort was worthwhile!
From Rabosera Col, under an amazing pass called the “W”, we’ll start climbing until Corral de Grasa where a singletrack leads to Farrihuelo Refuge. This stunning spot is one of the highlights of the stage. From the refuge, the track goes through the highest part of the mountain range offering wonderful views of Fuencalderas and Biel forests.
In the heart of Sierra de Santo Domingo, the route goes up-and-down by dirt roads and good singletracks passing by some huge rock walls. The trails are beautiful but also demanding. Mal Paso singletrack, surrounded by big conglomerate rocks, is maybe the most impressive of this area. After some hike-a-bike we’ll reach Cabo Val summit, from where all the route we’ve already done can be seen.
To end the tour, a superb downhill trail goes down to Artica Plana refuge. From there, a singletrack decent leads to the medieval village of Luesia.
You’ve completed the challenge! Congratulations!
