TODAY IS GONNA BE A GREAT DAY. YOU’RE GOING TO ENJOY THE WONDERFUL LANDSCAPES OF SOUTHERN SIERRA DE GUARA LIKE THE ASTONISHING ROCKY FORMATIONS OF TOZAL DE GUARA AND VADIELLO.
We depart from Hostelería de Guara taking GR-1 historic path bordering the houses of Bierge and passing by the oil mill before getting on a local road. After a short descent, we arrive to Bierge’s waterfall.
Then, we’ll climb by road to the picturesque village of San Román. With lovely views of Guara mountains, we must head towards its church to take a dirt road dominating the Formiga valley. Tozal de Guara stands majestic over its foothills, locally known as Somontano.
In Yaso, the route connects with another beautiful local road passing by the villages of Panzano and Aguas. There we’ll leave the asphalt getting into a wild territory: Calcón and Vadiello. After passing by Calcón Dam, the greatness of Guara starts to unfold. It’s vertical rocky landscape is overwhelming.
The toughest climb of the day begins just after the dam’s buildings. At the top, another magical panoramic view is waiting for us: a group of “mallos”, huge conglomerate cliffs and needles, emerging over Vadiello Lake. An impressive picture.
A long and rocky descent by unpaved road heads towards Vadiello Dam, where we must take a local road with continuous ups-and-downs bordering the cliff. Once we get out of the river course, we’ll reach the lowlands of Abadiado de Montearagón, in Loporzano. Next stop, Virgen del Viñedo shrine, is close. After, we must reach the place where we decided to spend our first night. Today was a great day, right?
