ARE YOU READY FOR A MEDIEVAL CRUSADE? OUR SUGGESTION TODAY IS TO REACH SOS DEL REY CATÓLICO OR UNCASTILLO CROSSING SIERRA DE SANTO DOMINGO RANGE PASSING BY ONE OF ITS HIGHLIGHTS, THE NATURAL POOL OF POZO PIGALO. LATER, WE WILL DISCOVER THE WONDERFUL AND LONELY SIBIRANA TOWERS. THERE, WE’LL CHOOSE BETWEEN TAKING THE SHORTER VARIANT TO UNCASTILLO OR FOLLOWING THE ORIGINAL TRACK TO SOS DEL REY CATÓLICO PASSING BY THE PECULIAR SPOT OF PETILLA DE ARAGÓN (NAVARRA). THE FINISH LINE OF THIS PRE-PYRENEAN CRUSADE IS UP TO YOU!
Last stage is designed to connect Biel and Sos del Rey Católico, having two variants heading to Luesia and Uncastillo. Luesia variant takes a paved road just from the departure in Biel. Uncastillo variant separates from the original track at the middle of the stage after visiting Sibirana towers. Both are amazing and well preserved medieval villages so the choice is quite difficult.
The route departs from the bridge over Arba River, in Biel. There, taking a paved road to Luesia is the firstoption. The original track climbs up steadily to Sierra de Santo Domingo by dirt roads in good condition. In Fayanás Col the views of the mountain range and its sharp rocky ridges are splendid. From the col, a long descent heads to Pozo Pigalo pool, a highlight. Then, we leave behind the Sierra getting deep into a valley where the superb towers of Sibirana are hidden.
After Sibirana there’s a cross where Uncastillo variant separates. If we decide to follow the original track to Sos del Rey Católico, we’ll need to climb up to Sibirana Pass. We’re going to ride for a while through the lands of Navarra, descending by good trails to Petilla de Aragón, a nice place where the Nobel Price D. Santiago Ramón y Caja was born.
A peaceful road section over Val de Onsella will take us back to Cinco Villas region, a rural landscape peppered with tiny villages. From Pardinas de Ceñito we’ll climb to the top of Roita mountain, where the ruins of a medieval castle lie. From the col, some unused tracks take to a fence that must be crossed to descend to the bottom of the valley heading towards Sos. At the end of the valley is located the important Convento de Valentuñana, from where is possible to take both a paved or unpaved road to Sos. Finally, we’ll reach the monumental medieval town of Sos del Rey Católico. A glorious end to a wonderful challenge.
