Switch on your camera and get ready to have an unforgettable experience discovering the natural wonders of Sierra de Loarre and its ancient heritage by visiting Loarre Castle and the medieval ensemble of Marcuello. Today we leave Mallos de Riglos to ascend Collado de Santo Román, close to the nearby Mirador de los Buitres and the medieval castle and hermitages of Marcuello, located over the cliffs of Os Fils.
Afterwards, we’ll ascend to one of the most beautiful summits of this range, Peña del Sol (1,287 m), to enjoy its spectacular panoramic views. Then, a gravel road connects with the path that leads to the shelter and hermitage of Santa Marina.
After leaving this beautiful spot, we continue until we reach the extraordinary Loarre Castle, one of the greatest jewels of the ancient Aragonese and Spanish heritage. You’ll never forget. From the Castle, we descend to the beautiful village of Loarre.
The section between Marcuello Castle and Peña del Sol, going through a firewall, is quite steep. Be patient. Some sections are poorly defined and with little signaling. Pay attention to the GPS device, especially when taking the section ascending to Santa Marina Refuge.
Santa Marina Refuge is opened. It is possible to stay overnight. Please, keep it tidy and clean. You might also find animals around the shelter. Please, respect them.
There are no water supplies between Riglos and Loarre Castle. In the castle’s Visitors Center there is a bar where you’ll find food and drinks.
Temperatures in the summer months can be very hot at the top of the range. Try to avoid walking during the central hours of the day.
